Adventures in Toy Shopping: It Ain’t Human

28 06 2014

Hopped around during the week to a few local establishments and picked up few cool things. None of them human.

First up I got Neca’s poseable Godzilla 2014 movie action figure. He’s equal to scale with the S.H.MonsterArts figures but not as well sculpted or highly articulated. Still, he has enough articulation to be considered very good in my book.

My local Target had just got in the TMNT movie figures. I most likely won’t get all the figures, but I got my favorite Turtle Raphael. The sculpt is pretty good for a $9 figure.

They’re priced the same as the Animated Nick TMNT figures. He actually scales a bit taller than my Battle Shell Raph. His articulation system is the same as Battle Shell Raph.

My comicshop owner buddy gave me this UltraAct Glenfire. Apparently it was misordered and the distributor didn’t want it back. Lucky to have friends in the right places.

Lastly, this one was an online deal I got from Bigbadtoystore.com when they had their Botcon 2014 sale. MP Lambor (aka Sideswipe) was $10 off so I was able to get him for $70. He looks great next to my MP Prowl.

Takara Tomy Transformers Go Beast Hunters Arcee

15 01 2014

I passed on the Hasbro release for its horrid paint job but I knew deep down that Takara Tomy would give this lady the proper paint job she deserves. Sporting a much deeper blue violet scheme, with metallic pink trims, this Beast Hunters version of Arcee is a sweet sight to my eyes. She comes in a blister card package very much like her Hasbro counterpart.

The mold is pretty much a revision of the original deluxe mold with bat-like features.

No stickers need to be applied this time around which is step up from her original mold by Takara Tomy.

She comes with a super-sized twin arrow bow that can be worn in both bike and robot forms.

If you’re an Arcee fan like me, this figure is definitely a cool improvement. Sells for about $30 (bigbadtoystore.com)

Today’s Arrival: Takara Transformers MP-17 Prowl

15 10 2013

Nothing like a Masterpiece from Takara Tomy to make my month. The 1st of fair ladies is hear with one of my all-time favorite G1 characters.

Box is simple and keeps with the style of recent MP figures.

You get figure (in car mode), his main rifle, instructions (in Japanese), and character card (in Japanese).

Car Mode is what you expect. Rolls smoothly and has a very accurate looking design with nice crisp markings.

In robot mode, he’s simply amazing.

Today’s Arrival: Takara Tomy Transformers Prime AM-26 Smokescreen

8 12 2012

Here’s Smokescreen. Takara Tomy released this figure ahead of Hasbro’s US version and the only reason I decided to get this version was because of the very cool Arms Micron figure. He sells for about $30 and is available at bigbadtoystore. He comes in a very cool box with nice CGI art of Smokescreen as well as product images on the side and back.

The photos on the packaging show a pure white plastic Smokescreen. Unfortunately the actual toy in hand is in a very light grey. It re-uses the Knockout mold with a new rear and spoiler section.

Naturally, you get transform instructions, an assemble guide for the Arms Micron, a mini-toy catalog, and decal stickers.

Once you apply the decals, you start to see the coolness come out. It feels less like Knockout.

In Robot Mode, you will notice he is pretty much a white Knockout with a new head mold. He is missing the big bulky shoulders, door wings, & weapons from the animated show. By rotating the shoulder pieces down towards the waist you can get a little bulk for a less Knockout feel.

The Arms Micron is one of the most unique to date because you can do various things. In robot mode, it has a typical humanoid design. I decided to grey panel line the Arms Micron and the figure with a Gundam Marker to bring out the sculpting.

In its bird-like mode, the Arms Micron can act like a little Laserbeak for Smokescreen or crossbow type weapon for the hand.

You can modify the wings on the Arms Micron to give Smokescreen wings for his back. By flipping the wings in a U-Shape in the image below and clipping it to the back of the figure you can achieve a slight winged appearance.

Even though this figure is nothing like his CGI animated design, this figure did turn out pretty descent. If you plan to pick this up, I highly encourage you grab yourself a grey Gundam Marker to panel line the toy. It makes a whole lot of difference. I really think this is the version US fans will get rather than a completely new and original CGI accurate mold. I imagine instead of decals there will be paint apps & a gun type weapon. If the weapon can’t attached to the back and act like wings then I’d recommend the Takara Tomy version.

Today’s Arrival: Takara Tomy Transformers Prime Deluxe Arcee

8 11 2012

I was watching a few of Youtube video reviews about the Takara Tomy version for the Transformers Prime Deluxe Class Arcee and the all them recommend that version over the US Hasbro R.I.D. version. So i ordered it off eBay and just got it in hand today.

Arcee comes in a really cool looking box. Honestly, too much packaging just for bike if you ask me.

Once you pull out the interior box, you’ll notice Arcee bagged in a little cube hole in bike mode. Further inside are instructions sheets for Arcee & her Arms Micron, and an advertising sheet for other figures in the line. You’ll notice a plastic runner with all the Arms Micron parts you need to cut out and assemble according to its instruction sheet. Felt like I was building a Gundam kit. Lastly, decals for added color which I was really excited to apply.

The overall blue used for Arcee is much deeper and has a hint of sparkle to it. Bike mode is awesome. Robot mode is amazing as she sports a lean female physique.

She doesn’t come with pink decals for those lightning bolts on the side of her face and the forehead horn so I grabbed a pink Sharpie to fill in the missing color. 1 thing to point out is the Sharpie will go on transparent and will coat the silver underneath making it a metallic pink. It matches perfect with the pink decals the toy comes with. Caution: Gentle apply with the Sharpie and don’t overcoat or you run the risk of causing the silver underneath to bleed off the mold.

Her pink colored Arms Micron is tiny yet deadly when transformed into a blade weapon.

You do have to deal with the chore of putting on the decals which don’t stick as strongly as you want but all in all, a much better toy compared to the US Hasbro version.
