Adventures in Toy Shopping: It Ain’t Human

28 06 2014

Hopped around during the week to a few local establishments and picked up few cool things. None of them human.

First up I got Neca’s poseable Godzilla 2014 movie action figure. He’s equal to scale with the S.H.MonsterArts figures but not as well sculpted or highly articulated. Still, he has enough articulation to be considered very good in my book.

My local Target had just got in the TMNT movie figures. I most likely won’t get all the figures, but I got my favorite Turtle Raphael. The sculpt is pretty good for a $9 figure.

They’re priced the same as the Animated Nick TMNT figures. He actually scales a bit taller than my Battle Shell Raph. His articulation system is the same as Battle Shell Raph.

My comicshop owner buddy gave me this UltraAct Glenfire. Apparently it was misordered and the distributor didn’t want it back. Lucky to have friends in the right places.

Lastly, this one was an online deal I got from when they had their Botcon 2014 sale. MP Lambor (aka Sideswipe) was $10 off so I was able to get him for $70. He looks great next to my MP Prowl.

Adventures in Toy Shopping: TF4 Day and Big Wow in San Jose

17 05 2014

Today marks the official retail release date of the Transformers Age of Extinction movie toys. Earlier in the week, I took advantage of Amazon’s buy 1 get 1 for 30% off when they sold their stock online last Monday. Apparently Monday was referred to Cybertron Monday – the official online release date for the movie figures. I was able to get the Scorn and Slug through that deal and today I hopped over to Toysrus and used my $5 off coupon and picked leader class Optimus Prime. I honestly like the design of these toys.

After learning Takara Tomy was doing a more movie accurate colored Optimus with more silver paint apps but selling for $80, I decided to take time to add some more silver paint to my US version Optimus myself. Using Tamiya Acrylic paint,  I painted parts of the arms, chest, head, and fully painted thighs and feet.

The annual Big Wow Comic Convention hit San Jose, CA this weekend. It’s more fan friendly convention for better interaction with comic creators. Relatively a small show but there was a descent seller presence. I was able to track down a very cool Evil Lyn from the 2000’s MOTU as well as TF Generations Scourage. Also snagged the DC Collectibles Designer Series Nightwing based off the art designs of Greg Capullo.

The real bargain I found was an Ultra-Act Ultraman Tiga Sky Mode figure for $20.

Takara Tomy Transformers Go Beast Hunters Arcee

15 01 2014

I passed on the Hasbro release for its horrid paint job but I knew deep down that Takara Tomy would give this lady the proper paint job she deserves. Sporting a much deeper blue violet scheme, with metallic pink trims, this Beast Hunters version of Arcee is a sweet sight to my eyes. She comes in a blister card package very much like her Hasbro counterpart.

The mold is pretty much a revision of the original deluxe mold with bat-like features.

No stickers need to be applied this time around which is step up from her original mold by Takara Tomy.

She comes with a super-sized twin arrow bow that can be worn in both bike and robot forms.

If you’re an Arcee fan like me, this figure is definitely a cool improvement. Sells for about $30 (

Even though TF Prime is off the air, the toys keep rolling out. Spotted Prowl at my local Target ($14.99) and love how Hasbro handled this figure.

Transformers Prime Prowl 01

He uses the same bold mold as the previously release Smokescreen with new paint apps, new head mold, and light bar. He’s whiter in color than Smokescreen which is really nice.

The head mold has more of TF Animated feel than his Classic G1 look. The light piping is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time.

Next to Smokescreen, you can see how Hasbro can craft out another character with some simple changes.

Adventures in Toy Shopping: Target Finds

20 06 2013

It’s been a few weeks and I really haven’t had much luck in spotting anything descent on the shelves but all that changed with this morning recent Target visit. Spotted a Hasbro Marvel Universe Nova figure and Transformers Voyager Class Springer. Oh Happy Day.

Nova is a favorite character of mine. I love his recent redesign a lot but the figure doesn’t really deliver. All he is a new head sculpt with gold armor bits attached.

Springer may be one of the best Hasbro TF figures to come out in years.  He doesn’t share the problem most recent TF toys have of being hollow in certain areas. He’s solid and extremely fun to mess with. His transformation between the 3 different modes (robot, car, helicopter) is clever and fun. His sculpt is just amazing and comes with really sool weapons. So impressed.

Hasbro Transformers Beast Hunter Voyager Optimus Prime with Custom Faceplate

22 04 2013

This figure I intentional held off from buying until I heard how Takara Tomy was going to handle their release with their Transformer Go! series. They ended up going with slightly lighter colored red and blue and changed all the translucent green parts to translucent blue. The real important factor to me was whether their version would have a faceplate head sculpt instead of the mouth version. For me,  MY Optimus Prime figure must have the face plate head. The going price would probably be around $60 with shipping if I decided to go that route. Decided to just go with the US version and handle the face plate myself with non-dry putt.

Though not perfect, I did the best I could to mold a face plate on to the figure. I used just a little of the putty and shaped it with a toothpick and xacto knife. It’s definitely not sleek and hard edged but I get the look I generally want.

At a distance, which is generally the view I’ll see this guy the most when looking on my shelf , he looks good. I’m glad the gray of the putty matches the gray used on areas like on the biceps. To add a little extra to the figure, I used a couple of Autobot stickers from on the shoulders.

Though not the perfect solution, it works for me. In the future, I hope that a 3rd party company has alternate head in the works or at least an attachable face plate to stick on.

Adventures in Toy Shopping: Tuesday Morning Finds

2 04 2013

Stopped by my local Target today and picked up a few things since a lot of Hasbro brands were on sale.

First up some Transformers Prime Cyberverse figures. Found new bulkier Optimus Prime, Predaking, and Airachnid.

Picked up some G.I Joe Retaliation movie figures. Roadblock has an awesome head sculpt of the Rock and some really cool weapon accessories.

This line is heavy with various types of ninjas and the Cyber ninja has got to be one of the top ones. Don’t know if he shows up in the movie (haven’t seen it yet) but he has a really cool design and color scheme.

And just for fun, nabbed a 5 figure set of the Micro Force series. They’re rubber based figures and have a fun sculpt.
