Adventures in Toy Shopping: TF4 Day and Big Wow in San Jose

17 05 2014

Today marks the official retail release date of the Transformers Age of Extinction movie toys. Earlier in the week, I took advantage of Amazon’s buy 1 get 1 for 30% off when they sold their stock online last Monday. Apparently Monday was referred to Cybertron Monday – the official online release date for the movie figures. I was able to get the Scorn and Slug through that deal and today I hopped over to Toysrus and used my $5 off coupon and picked leader class Optimus Prime. I honestly like the design of these toys.

After learning Takara Tomy was doing a more movie accurate colored Optimus with more silver paint apps but selling for $80, I decided to take time to add some more silver paint to my US version Optimus myself. Using Tamiya Acrylic paint,  I painted parts of the arms, chest, head, and fully painted thighs and feet.

The annual Big Wow Comic Convention hit San Jose, CA this weekend. It’s more fan friendly convention for better interaction with comic creators. Relatively a small show but there was a descent seller presence. I was able to track down a very cool Evil Lyn from the 2000’s MOTU as well as TF Generations Scourage. Also snagged the DC Collectibles Designer Series Nightwing based off the art designs of Greg Capullo.

The real bargain I found was an Ultra-Act Ultraman Tiga Sky Mode figure for $20.

Adventures in Toy Shopping: Hasbro Transformers Generations: Deluxe Class: Orion Pax

7 08 2013

I can’t remember Hasbro ever releasing a Orion Pax version of Optimus Prime but this guy is definitely a welcome edition to my Transformers collection.

orion pax 01

Orion Pax is based off the IDW comics universe. The figure includes a reprint of Transformers Spotlight comic featuring Orion Pax

orion pax 02

He comes in his typical colors. His vehicle mode is sporty looking truck.

orion pax 03

In robot mode, he has very youthful design.

Hasbro Transformers Generation Orion Pax 00

His head sculpt features no mouth guard.

orion pax 05

He has very sizable energon axe that can be mounted on the side of his vehicle mode.

orion pax 06

In robot mode, the axe compliments Orion very well.

orion pax 07

His blaster has elements of his classic G1 gun but a little more compact.

orion pax 08

This figure is great all around. Good design in both modes, highly articulated, and clever in transformation (About $14.99, Target).

Hasbro Transformers Beast Hunter Voyager Optimus Prime with Custom Faceplate

22 04 2013

This figure I intentional held off from buying until I heard how Takara Tomy was going to handle their release with their Transformer Go! series. They ended up going with slightly lighter colored red and blue and changed all the translucent green parts to translucent blue. The real important factor to me was whether their version would have a faceplate head sculpt instead of the mouth version. For me,  MY Optimus Prime figure must have the face plate head. The going price would probably be around $60 with shipping if I decided to go that route. Decided to just go with the US version and handle the face plate myself with non-dry putt.

Though not perfect, I did the best I could to mold a face plate on to the figure. I used just a little of the putty and shaped it with a toothpick and xacto knife. It’s definitely not sleek and hard edged but I get the look I generally want.

At a distance, which is generally the view I’ll see this guy the most when looking on my shelf , he looks good. I’m glad the gray of the putty matches the gray used on areas like on the biceps. To add a little extra to the figure, I used a couple of Autobot stickers from Reprolabels.com on the shoulders.

Though not the perfect solution, it works for me. In the future, I hope that a 3rd party company has alternate head in the works or at least an attachable face plate to stick on.

Adventures in Toy Shopping: Tuesday Morning Finds

2 04 2013

Stopped by my local Target today and picked up a few things since a lot of Hasbro brands were on sale.

First up some Transformers Prime Cyberverse figures. Found new bulkier Optimus Prime, Predaking, and Airachnid.

Picked up some G.I Joe Retaliation movie figures. Roadblock has an awesome head sculpt of the Rock and some really cool weapon accessories.

Hasbro G.I. Joe Retaliation Battle-Kata Roadblock

This line is heavy with various types of ninjas and the Cyber ninja has got to be one of the top ones. Don’t know if he shows up in the movie (haven’t seen it yet) but he has a really cool design and color scheme.

And just for fun, nabbed a 5 figure set of the Micro Force series. They’re rubber based figures and have a fun sculpt.

Adventures in Toy Shopping: Big Haul Today

13 02 2013

I get asked a lot by viewers is how can I afford the hobby of toy collecting. Well the simple answer is I sell off older toys I just don’t care for. I’ve been collecting for a long time so i have vast stock of action figures that I find could use a new home. Rarely do i need to spend extra cash to buy something new that I want.

So went to Target and Toysrus and picked up some new additions (no video reviews on these).

1st up is Bandai’s Power Rangers Megaforce 7″ Armored Ultra Mode Red Ranger ($19.99)

Playmates Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutagen Ooze Tossin’ Raphael ($8.99 Target). This one was an experimental buy to see if I could do a head swap. You can!

Playmates TMNT Raph

Got a mini non-transformable Rescue Bot Optimus Prime ($2.99 Toysrus) that comes in a small bag. You’ll have to walk over to the boys section rather than the action figure section to find him. A nice desktop figure. Also snagged the Hasbro Transformers WFC Ultra Magnus ($14.99 Target). Nice repaint of the previously release Optimus Prime version. Digging the extra sword he comes with.

rescue optimus and Magnus

Target had the newest Hasbro Transformers Beast Hunters Voyager Class figures. Passed on Optimus Prime because of that horrible head sculpt but Predaking ($19.99) looked very cool.

Predaking

Toysrus had the very cool Batman/Superman/Killer Croc 3 pack. I passed on it but I’m probably gonna pick it up at the end of week. All the figures look very cool.

Today’s Arrival: Dr. Wu Transformers Prime Optimus Prime Custom Cannons

13 12 2012

Were you bummed like me when you got your 1st edition TF Prime: Optimus and got only 1 cannon and 1 sword. Thanks to third party maker Dr. Wu, now you can get animation accurate looking cannons.

Transformers Prime Dr. Wu Cannon Guns Optimus Prime 01

The cannons uses the exact mold of the black cannon that comes with FE Optimus.

Transformers Prime Dr. Wu Cannon Guns Optimus Prime 02

The cannons aren’t quite perfect. As seen here, some of the cannon isn’t completely painted over.

The cannons fit perfectly and cover Optimus’s hands pretty well so they look hidden.

Price at about $16, I definitely think these cannons will pimp up your FE Optimus very nicely.

Today’s Arrival: Toysrus Hasbro Masterpiece Optimus Prime

13 11 2012

Thanks to a heads up from my buddy, I was able to order Toysrus exclusive Hasbro Masterpiece Optimus Prime from Toysrus.com ($130.04 (w/tax, free shipping)).

Out of package he’s everything you remember if you were a child of the 80’s. Truck mode has a flawless classic look. The trailer opens up in the back to reveal roller. Notice the little Spike Witwicky figure.

Of course, the trailer converts to battle station mode with all the classic elements.

A third mode for the trailer in repair bay mode.

In this mode, you can store your weapons on the walls.

Prime’s chest opens up to reveal the Matrix of Leadership

Here’s a couple of full body shots of the Autobot Leader.

Lastly, a battle-axe effect part clips right over a hand of your choice. Bring it Megatron!
